The Science Behind Lactation Cookies

What makes lactation cookies actually work?
Let's explore the ingredients that support milk supply - and why we intentionally leave fenugreek out.

Not Just a Tasty Treat

Lactation cookies aren't just delicious — they're thoughtfully formulated with ingredients traditionally known as galactagogues. These are foods and herbs believed to support breast milk production and maternal nourishment during postpartum.

At Boobin Delicious, every ingredient serves a purpose. No fillers. No trends. Just evidence-informed choices and generations of traditional wisdom.

Brewer’s Yeast

A classic lactation ingredient, brewer’s yeast is rich in B vitamins, iron, protein, and chromium. Many breastfeeding mothers report improved energy levels and increased milk supply when incorporating it into their diet. It’s nutrient-dense support in cookie form.

Oats

Oats have been used for centuries as a traditional galactagogue. They are a source of iron, fibre, and complex carbohydrates — all of which support steady energy levels and overall postpartum recovery. Iron in particular plays a role in healthy milk production.

Flaxseed

Flaxseed contains omega-3 fatty acids and phytoestrogens, which may support hormonal balance during breastfeeding. It also adds fibre and healthy fats — both essential for nourishing mothers properly, not just quickly.

Barley

Barley is one of the lesser-talked-about lactation supporters. It contains beta-glucan, a type of fibre that may stimulate prolactin — the hormone responsible for milk production. Barley has been traditionally used in cultures around the world to support breastfeeding mothers, and we intentionally include it for that reason.

Why We Don’t Use Fenugreek

Fenugreek is often considered the most famous galactagogue — but it isn’t right for everyone. Some women experience digestive discomfort, while others report a decrease in milk supply rather than an increase.

Because every mother’s body is different, we’ve chosen to formulate our cookies without fenugreek. Instead, we focus on a balanced combination of well-tolerated, food-based ingredients that nourish without overwhelming.

The Boobin Difference

Anyone can throw oats and brewer’s yeast into a cookie and call it a “lactation” product. I spent years refining our recipes to maximise both effectiveness and flavour.

The result? A cookie that genuinely tastes indulgent — while still delivering purposeful, thoughtfully balanced ingredients to support breastfeeding mothers.

Because postpartum nourishment should feel like care… not compromise.
